Abstract

The institution jem is one of the most significant features of the culture of Heterodox Muslim Turkish population (Bektashi and Kizilbash) in Bulgaria. This institution or community has not been an object of a specific research until recently; the data about it is scarce as well. That is why my task here is to represent in detail the specific character of this community which has the status of an institution in the culture of Hetеrodox Muslims in Bulgaria. The study is based mainly on my field research carried out during the last twenty years. My findings reflect predominantly the condition of the institution in the 1980s when started processes of its gradual decline.
