Abstract

“Report on the Islamic essence and methods for governing mountaineers” composed by the Caucasus Viceroy Prince A.I. Bariatinskii (1856-1862) played an important role in the formation of the Russian imperial discourse on Muridism in the region. According to the governor, the emergence and further activation Muridism in the Caucasus is a logical continuation of the revitalization of Islam around the world "from Africa to Indian islands." To counter Muridism Baryatinsky proposed to support Muslim mountaineers’ elite in Circassia, Greater Kabarda and Lowland Daghestan, as well as customary law.
