Abstract


The article examines the formation and evolution of such Islamic institutions as mekteb, mahalla, madrasa, waqf and Muslim Spiritual Assembly (muftiate) itself as a body of limited autonomy and shari‘a jurisprudence in the Russian Empire. The author pays attention to the impact on the development of these institutions made by the Russian authorities and the changes provoked by the Jadid movement and political developments in the late imperial period at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries.
