Abstract

The paper deals with religious/ethical prescriptions and practices of Bulgarian Muslims in connection with the “institutionalized” alms-giving (zakat) and the “voluntary” charity (sadaqa). The study is based on oral Muslim stories mainly recorded by the author in the late 1990s. They reflect the picture of Muslim charitable institutions in the course of a period of a nearly a hundred years – from the annexation of the Rhodope mountains to Bulgarian state territory to the end of the 20th century.
