Focus and Scope

We use the notion of academic “Studies of Islam”/“Islamic Studies” in a broad sense, implying by it any issue concerning Islam and Muslim societies. However, it will be unlikely to find in the journal those articles, which do not touch on specifically Islamic topics. An example is an article which discusses a certain type of sports in a particular Muslim country. However, we would welcome studies which investigate the influences of “Islamic ethics” on the “sporting spirit. We are interested in the effects of Islam on people and vice versa.

We believe that the last 200-250 years of world history should be subject to our special attention. Modernization, colonization, urbanization, secularization of Muslim societies as well as the efforts for nation-state building have led to a dramatic devaluation of Islam's significance as a socio-political factor. In response to global challenges, some Muslims have tried to create the “halal” ideologies, which have similarly failed. The collapse of the political Islam, as studied, in particular, by Olivier Roy and Gilles Kepel, confirms this fact. Yet, Islam has not vanished, and it continues to affect the lives of many people. Speaking in the Muslim terms, we are now probably observing two main trends: the dilution and redefinition of the notions of “Dar al Islam” (by the way, the journal title of Pax Islamica originates from this very notion) and yet another transformation of the “din”, a conversion of this phenomenon into “religion”.

How is this process occuring? How have Islam and the Muslims changed? What are the borders between the secular and divine in Islam? What are the classical texts which underpin the Islamic tradition and how do Muslims interpret them in a new way? How did the prominent orientalists of the past interpret Islam? What is the historical background and important events which influenced the course of history in the Muslim East? How do policy-makers use Islam to legitimize their power?

What is the sociology of Islam, and does it exist in the first place? To what extent do Muslims influence global migration flows, and does Islam influence the migrants themselves? Can we describe Muslims as the the West’s “Other”? Has democracy become the “Dar al Islam”? In what way will the “Muslim question” shape the global future? To what extent is Islam inseparable from politics? What new trends and movements are emerging in the Muslim milieus and why? How do ordinary Muslims live, and is there any difference between the Muslim anthropology and the general one?

Peer Review Process

We don't take charges neither for publication nor reviewing process.

All material received for publication go through a two-tier system of review: external and internal.

The received article first will reviewed by editors to check whether they are respond the subject of the edition and its overall requirements. It is assumed that this must be done in a period, which not exceeding one month.

The received articles will be sent  to expert(s) in the relevant branch to reach first decisions within two months from the date of the receiving the article.

The procedure of review and publishing:

1. The author(s) sends the material for publication via email, that can be accepted by editorial board for consideration only if it matches the current edition requirements. 

2. The editorial board sends an article for reviewing.

3. By the results of review article may be:

а) accepted for publication;

б) returned to the author(s) for changings, appropriate adjustments, if it requirs in review;

в) abandoned, as being not comply with the requirements (the reasons have to be stated in the rewiew).

4. Only after final approval with the author(authors) all questions about the contents the material (including repeatedreview if the previous review required revision) article considered accepted for publication.

5. The editorial board decide if include the articles in issue (number) of edition.

6. The article is sent for the publication.

7. The author(s) is reported by email about the fact of publication of the next issue of the edition.

The Bulletin is an open resource, which accepts and places the materials in accordance with editorial policy and when it matches the applicable requirements of normative legal acts ofUkraine.

All complaints, comments and questions regarding the activities of the scientific edition should be sent to the email or regular mail. 

Open Access Policy

The journal provides immediate open access to online-published paper. We support principles of free spreading of scientific information and global exchange of knowledge for the social progress.

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...

Ethics publications

As part of the editorial policy of the journal has consistently adhered to publishing standards publications COP Code of Conduct, approved by the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics).

Materials submitted to the journal articles are reviewed by members of the editorial board of the publication and/or by independent experts on the basis of the principle of objectivity and the position of the current international academic standards.

The editors reserve the right to make stylistic corrections of the original manuscript. From the authors of the article are coordinated changes that, in the opinion of the editorial board, can change the meaning of the text.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject the consideration of articles that do not meet the requirements and topics of the journal.

Allowed difference with the views of the editorial board, expressed in the article are the views and suggestions of the authors. Responsibility for the accuracy of the information in the article, the accuracy of the names and terms of statistical data, the names and the names of other persons, as well as citations are authors.

The editors reserve the right to edit an insignificant literary texts and some reduction while preserving the author's presentational style.

Published content items may not be used for publication in other scientific journals. In case of plagiarism is the responsibility of the authors of the submissions.

Copyright

Policy journal in the field of copyright aimed at ensuring open access to research results.

By submitting an article to the editor the author(s) will automatically grant the right editors edit, print in the journal, as well as post content articles on the official website of the journal.

For authors unconditionally reserves the right to reproduce the content of the article in the course of teaching, to use the materials in any other article of its work to place a copy of the article for any other sources of mass media, with the obligatory indication of the source data in the journal article.

Anti-Plagiarism

The Editorial Board shall make known to the authors that they are the proper personal responsibility for the authenticity of the contents of the original articles. In order to avoid incorrect borrowing materials or use of the results of third-party research, we ask the authors to adhere to the ethics of scientific citing.

To prevent possible plagiarism revision undertakes the following:

• by decision of the responsible editor of the article material can be tested for the presence of loans from third parties work without proper reference to the original literary source;
• article reviewer points out in its conclusion on the absence or presence of possible plagiarism in an article.

If in the process of analyzing materials found plagiarism, the article is not accepted for publication with the notification of the decision of the editorial board of the authors.

In order for the Editors to make the best decision on how to handle a manuscript it is important that any conflicts of interest that the authors or reviewers of a paper may have are disclosed on submission.

A conflict of interest exists when professional judgement concerning such primary interests as patients’ welfare or validity of research may be influenced by possible financial gain or personal rivalry. It may arise for the authors of an article when they have a financial interest that may influence their interpretation of their results or those of others.
